RELLA BRAITHWAITE BLACK HISTORY FOUNDATION

WHO WE ARE:

The Rella Braithwaite Black History Foundation, officially founded in 1997 by Diana Braithwaite, represents a profound multi-generational commitment to preserving Black-Canadian heritage through its extensive photographic and multimedia archives. The genesis of this significant collection began much earlier, in the 1960s, with Diana's mother, Rella Braithwaite, who meticulously researched and curated one of the nation's first comprehensive Black-Canadian historical collections. This foundational work evolved with Diana Braithwaite's involvement from the 1990s onward, as she collaborated with her mother to expand the repository with additional resource materials, transforming it into a vast and significant photographic and multi-media archive. Diana further dedicated herself to researching and digitizing these invaluable collections, officially incorporating the online gallery and naming it after her mother, Rella Braithwaite, in 2017, two years before Rella's passing at 96. Together, their enduring efforts have created an indispensable online resource, ensuring the accessibility and recognition of Black-Canadian contributions for future generations.
